Question 1

Does this page include areas around Kirkwall?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The map shows petrol stations in Kirkwall and nearby areas based on what you're viewing on the map. If you're just outside Kirkwall, zoom out slightly or search your postcode.

Question 2

How do I find the cheapest petrol and diesel in Kirkwall?

Accepted Answer

Use the fuel filter (petrol, super unleaded, diesel) and sort by price. You can also tap "Locate Me" to jump to your current area in Kirkwall.

Question 3

What affects petrol and diesel prices in Kirkwall?

Accepted Answer

Petrol and diesel prices in Kirkwall change because the cost of oil changes, the pound's exchange rate changes, and fuel has to be refined and delivered. On top of that, the government adds fuel duty and VAT, and each station sets its own profit margin. In Kirkwall, local competition and proximity to distribution centers also play a role. That's why at Resolvo we've built a live price map tool to help you track these fluctuations and find the cheapest petrol and diesel nearby in real-time.

Question 4

How much of the pump price is tax?

Accepted Answer

A big part of what you pay is tax. The UK adds fuel duty and then VAT on top of the total. For example, on £20 of petrol (at an average price of 135p/litre), you are paying roughly £11.17 in tax (£7.84 in duty and £3.33 in VAT). That means over half of your payment goes straight to the Treasury.

Question 5

Why is diesel sometimes more expensive than petrol?

Accepted Answer

Diesel can cost more because it can be harder to make in large enough amounts, and demand can be high (for vans, delivery fleets, and some cars). Sometimes petrol is higher instead — it depends on global supply and demand and what refineries are producing at the time.

Question 6

Why is petrol and diesel more expensive at motorway services near Kirkwall?

Accepted Answer

Motorway service stations usually charge more because they have higher running costs and less competition right next door. People also pay for convenience because they're already on a long trip. If you're traveling through Kirkwall, fill up in town before joining the motorway to save money.

Question 7

Why is the price on the Resolvo map different from the price at the pump in Kirkwall?

Accepted Answer

Prices can be different because stations in Kirkwall change prices during the day and it can take time for updates to show. Also, some stations run short promotions or loyalty discounts that aren't included in standard price feeds. Treat online prices as a strong guide, and always trust the sign at the station.

Question 8

How often do petrol stations in Kirkwall change prices?

Accepted Answer

There's no fixed time. Some stations in Kirkwall change prices daily, some change a few times a week, and some change whenever nearby stations change. That's why it's worth checking Resolvo's live map close to the time you plan to fill up.

Question 9

Why did pay-at-pump take or 'hold' £99/£100 on my card?

Accepted Answer

That's a temporary pre-authorisation hold. The pump asks your bank to approve up to a set amount to make sure your card works. After you finish filling up, you only pay for what you actually bought — the extra amount is released later by your bank. If you want to avoid this, pay inside at the till instead of paying at the pump.

Question 10

What's the difference between petrol and super unleaded?

Accepted Answer

Super unleaded is a higher-quality fuel for some engines. Some cars are designed to run best on it, but many cars are fine on normal petrol. Super unleaded usually costs more.

Question 11

Should I use super unleaded or normal petrol?

Accepted Answer

Follow what your car handbook says. If it recommends super unleaded, using it can improve performance and fuel economy for that engine. If your car is designed for normal petrol, super unleaded usually isn't worth the extra money.

Question 12

Can I mix super unleaded and normal petrol?

Accepted Answer

Yes — mixing is normally fine. Your car will run on the mix in the tank. Just make sure your car is compatible with normal petrol if you plan to use it regularly.

Question 13

Is there a best time of day to buy petrol or diesel in Kirkwall?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there typically is. Data suggests that midweek (especially Wednesday) often sees the lowest prices as demand dips. Buying during off-peak hours — like early morning or late at night — can also yield savings, as demand is lower and some stations adjust prices. Avoid weekends and late Friday afternoons, when prices often peak. In Kirkwall, local competition between stations is the biggest factor, so always use the Resolvo map to check the current live prices before heading out.

Question 14

Why are prices different at two stations from the same brand in Kirkwall?

Accepted Answer

Even if the brand name is the same, stations in Kirkwall can be run by different operators and have different costs (rent, staff, delivery costs). They also react to different local competitors. So prices can vary a lot even within the same brand.

Question 15

Why can't I find a specific petrol station on the map in Kirkwall?

Accepted Answer

It may not be included in the available data yet, it may not be reporting prices consistently, or it may be temporarily closed. Try searching nearby areas on the Resolvo map, or check back later as coverage improves.

Question 16

Do prices include loyalty discounts or vouchers?

Accepted Answer

Usually no. The map price is normally the standard price. Some stations offer discounts through loyalty cards or apps, which can make the pump price lower for some drivers.

Question 17

I got a parking ticket — can Resolvo help with that too?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Resolvo also has tools to help with parking and PCN appeals in Kirkwall. If you've received a ticket, you can use the appeals tool to understand your options and prepare an appeal based on your situation.
